Carey Foster PhD prize awarded to Alec Owens

Alec Owens, postdoctoral researcher in the Controlled Molecule Imaging group, has been awarded the Carey Foster PhD Prize for outstanding postgraduate physics research in the Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Positron Physics (AMOPP) group at University College London (UCL).

Jolijn Onvlee, postdoctoral researcher in the Controlled Molecule Imaging Group, was awarded a prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for her research proposal regarding the hydrogen bond dynamics in indole-water.
Yuan-Pin Chang is appointed as Assistant Professor at the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan

Dr. Yuan-Pin Chang, former postdoctoral scientist in the CFEL Controlled Molecule Imaging group, accepted an Assistant Professorship position at the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan. He starts his independent research group in the Department of Chemistry focusing on research in physical and atmospheric chemistry.

Our publications entitled "Time-dependent analysis of the mixed-field orientation of molecules without rotational symmetry" and "Improved spatial separation of neutral molecules" have been accepted and published in the Journal of Chemical Physics.

Europa Woche Hamburg – COMOTION – an example of the prestigeous european financial support for research

With the highly endowed grants of the European Research Council, top scientists from the field of fundamental research and pioneering research are awarded. Hamburg scientists are successful with their applications and so far have received a total of 50 ERC grants and funds of almost 85 million euros. One of them, Jochen Küpper, has received 2 million euros from the ERC for his research project COMOTION.

Jolijn Onvlee receives Dutch physics outreach award

Every year, the Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Natuurkunde (NTvN), the Dutch Journal of Physics, by the Nederlandse Natuurkundige Vereniging (Netherlands' Physical Society) has a contest for PhD students and recently graduated postdocs to write an article on their dissertation that should be understandable for a broad public – the Dutch people interested in physics.

New publication on the characterization of gas-flow from aerosol injectors in the Journal of Applied Physics

Our paper entitled "Characterizing gas flow from aerosol particle injectors" has been published in the Journal of Applied Physics. We show the detection of helium gas emerging from one of our aerosol injectors down to absolute number densities of 4×1016 cm-3, essentially measuring the local pressure inside a vacuum chamber with a spatial resolution of ~2 µm.
